Duathlon Series flies to Durban this weekend
Race 4 in the Momentum Health I-Flex National Duathlon Series 2012 powered by PeptoPro offers the offroad duathlete a brand-new course in the sub-tropical climes of Palm Lakes, Tinley Manor, in KZN this Sunday, 10 June. The fast and rolling offroad run and mountain bike routes will take athletes through sugarcane fields and along flowing singletrack next to streams. There will also be bridge crossings in this course designed by Russell White. “It is a lot easier than last year’s course at Holla Trails, but it’s still a MTB course!” quips the ever-mischievous multisporter.
He confirms that the course will be open from this weekend for the public wanting to ride it. Email email@example.com for details.
Who is In
Carla van Huyssteen, the past weekend’s bronze medallist at 2012 ITU Cross Triathlon World Champs told us: “My form is really good at the moment. I will be doing a few races back-to-back, but they will be for fun. I hope Palm Lakes offers the same technicality as Holla Trails did last year. It was a really nice venue with great technical singletrack.” She is racing XTERRA Sardinia this weekend.
Ladysmith’s Jean-Pierre ten Napel has always done well at the KZN venue and is on track for another good placing this year. “Training is going as well as work will allow. I will be at Palm lakes, together with my wife and Dad (Andre, who has done all but the Cape Town race this season). My brother in law, Andre Booyens, and I have just completed Sani2C in 21st overall and 17th in our category, and were stoked with our result as we started day one in the C-batch and had to work our way up.
KZN is the favourite race haunt of Secunda’s Brand du Plessis, the perennial overall winner of the Series since its inception in 2008. He nearly always podiums and Palm Lakes is unlikely to be any different. Will he own the overall Series title for a fifth year? All indications are that Mr Consistency will and with three events done and three remaining, Palm Lakes is his crucial Battle of Midway.
Who is Out
At this stage, no one from the BSG Elite Team will be competing. However, duathlon ace Andrea Steyn will race at Waterfall Estate. “Offroad does have an added injury risk and the athletes are focusing on International ITU or 5150 races,” says team manager Christopher Felgate.
Tyrone White out-biked the competitive field on his home turf at Holla Trails last year, including overall Series winner Brand du Plessis, XTERRA campaigner Lieuwe Boonstra and former roadie pro Jock Green. This year he will most likely be riding the course as a tourist. “I crashed the week before Sani2C and tore ligaments in my hand and damaged my intercostal muscles. I haven’t been able to ride or run since. I’m holding thumbs to at least cruise around and enjoy the brilliant course and venue. Defending last year’s win is not looking promising.”
Multiple race winner Erhard Wolfaardt will not be competing at Palm Lakes.
“I am focusing on Olympic Qualification for now which means I have to move all other races aside. I hope to be back racing at the local events towards the end of the year.”
“My form is good. I won the elite race at Eastern Cape Cycling Champs and am doing Tour of Freestate, but I won’t be travelling to KZN for event 4, unfortunately,” says podium contender Alae Brand of Cape Town.

Last year’s Momentum Health i-Flex National Duathlon Series, powered by PeptoPro, was the most successful in its four-year history. It’s back for a fifth season and all indications point to a bigger and better experience for hundreds of competitors nationally. Total prizemoney is set at more than R300,000 for the Series.
In 2012, the National Duathlon Series, Africa’s largest and richest duathlon, plans to take its reputation for providing slick organisation, exceptional value for money and the safest venues available, to another level. The race continues to be powered by both Momentum Health’s HealthReturns plan and the leading technology of PeptoPro and i-Flex, two products highly regarded by discerning endurance athletes for protein replacement as well as joint care.
This year’s race is different in that timing will be handled by Mr Price Sport, meaning results will be available even faster than before. Working with a professional photographic company will ensure high-quality photos will be available for sale online to all competitors.
