Reaching goals one step at a time

This past week was our fifth week of training, and it included our first session of brick training. Brick training is when you perform two disciplines straight after each other. If you had asked me five weeks ago to come for a cycle and run, my response would be… “Well which would you like me to do, cycle OR run?” This Saturday however we attempted our first brick session and it was fantastic! We completed our 20km road ride followed by a 2,5km run around the beautiful river near SSISA. We did all this in UNDER 90 minutes! I cannot explain to you the feeling in your body; getting off your bike from a tough cycle and now running at a speed I couldn’t even attempt to run at five weeks ago. Your toes are somewhat numb from the bike, and your thighs are shaky, but your mind knows that your body can still manage a 2,5km run, and voila… you get to the end point before you even have time to complain! First brick session… Successful!

On the subject of firsts… I also ran my first sub 30-minute 5km run this weekend on the beautiful coast in Knysna. I was there seconding my very fit friends in their Karoo to Coast cycle and took the opportunity to take myself running. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I checked my Garmin for my time… 29 minutes and 14 seconds to complete a 5km run! This is a whole seven minutes off my time trial five weeks ago!

My body is feeling good and my mind is positive, what more could I ask for two weeks before my first triathlon which is the Freshpak Fitness Festival happening in Clanwilliam next weekend. It’s now 11 days to go and I am feeling STRONG!
