The 89th edition of the world’s leading ultra marathon is set for 1 June 2014. The start of the 89km race will be signalled by the traditional gunfire at 5:30am outside Pietermaritzburg City Hall, and again 12 hours later to complete the event at The Sahara-Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban.
Only two weeks have passed since entries opened, and already 5,752 have committed to the challenge of the harder Down Run. Entrants have until 30 November or as soon as the cap of 18,000 has been reached to submit their entries. Thereafter, no entries will be accepted. Runners are urged to get their entries in early and adhere to the entry requirements, should they not want to risk missing out or lose their place at the start of the race.
The Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) Race Director, Johan Van Staden has advised runners to train hard and prepare themselves well for next year’s race. Van Staden says, “This past race has been a wake-up call for many runners that the Comrades Marathon is tough and demands adequate training.”
Furthermore, Van Staden highlighted, “It is our South African athletes who have catapulted the Comrades Marathon onto its premier status on the road running scene and we aim to cater for them accordingly. Hence, the CMA has implemented its ‘early bird’ entry fee in recent years to show our appreciation to our local runners.”
This early bird entry fee of R320 is available for all South African runners if you enter before 30 September, thereafter a cost of R350 per entry until the process is closed. Runners from the rest of Africa will be charged an entry fee of R550 and the cost to International athletes is R1,800.
Entries may be completed in one of three ways:
- Online via the website comrades.com
- Post the completed entry form with proof of payment to the CMA Office in Pietermaritzburg: P.O. Box 100621, Scottsville, 3209
Hand in the completed entry form together with payment at the Comrades Marathon House and CMA offices in Pietermaritzburg.
Please note that runners may enter the great race before running a qualifying race (minimum qualifying distance of 42.2km). Qualifying details must be submitted to the CMA by 6 May 2014.
